In 2021, IKEA launched its buy back or resell program in efforts to minimize waste and meet their proposed sustainability goals for 2030. Despite being available to customers for many years, few customers new or used the service. It was clear that something needed to be done.
As part of a design hackathon, my team got together to come up with ideas for how to automate the resell program and attract customers. Although my initial idea was not chosen for presentation, I believe that integrating AI into IKEA’s mobile app would speed up and facilitate the reselling of used IKEA furniture while also creating a circular customer experience.
